Naked and Famous

Chris’ post on apcs has got me thinking selvedge.  This summer, I also picked up my first pair and while I opted for a Canadian-made brand, admittingly, I didn’t know it at the time of purchase.  I later found out that Montreal based Naked and Famous famous makes all their jeans in Canada with the fabrics imported from Japan.  Definitely a good feeling finally having a pair of Canadian made denim! The irony behind the name makes the brand even more appealing. In the about us section on their website, they say the name is a “satire of our celeb-obsessed culture.” that aims “to poke fun at “Hollywood” and “Glamour” brands that sell jeans for $300…solely because Jessica Simpson wears them." Along with making the regular raw denim, the brand puts out cashmere denim and silk denim.  They sell in three fits: the skinny guy, the slim guy, and the weird guy.  I decided on the skinny guy, as I like a tapered leg on my jeans and also because raw denim usually stretches a significant amount anyhow.  The weird guy fit would be a good choice if your looking for a good pair of low rise jeans.  Just like any other raw denim, I would definitely recommend sizing down at least a waist size.  The first couple wears are painful but after that the jeans are perfect in almost every way.  I have one minor complaint as far as the negatives go:  the length in the jean is unusually long causing the bottom to scrunch up a bit.  But as far as I know, it’s the same deal for a lot of apc customers.  I didn’t wear them too regularly at first, but now I’m up to about four or five wears a weeks as I’m more committed to getting some nice looking fading in them.  Here are a couple shots of my progress so far. Keep in my mind that these are probably after about a month and a half of regular wearing.  I’ll post another picture after my first wash in a few months.

I’ve noticed a monumental difference in the quality of my selvedge raw denims compared to my previous non-selvedge pair.  I’ve snapped some pictures of the inseam and outseam on my old pair to show how the thread may unravel on non selvedge denim.  As expected with selvedge, this is yet to happen with my Naked and Famous pair.  I through in some full length shots as well since the jeans can still look great with a pair of Clarks and a button up.

Lastly, here are a few pictures of some naked and famous denims with some good fading after being washed.
